Had the Confederacy won the Battle of Gettysburg, Union morale would have decreased and Lincoln would not have persistently fought against the South. Yet, even if the South won that battle, European countries would not have supported them because they had banned slavery and it would ruin their reputations if they supported a side with slavery. Lincoln would not have given up and the South would keep on fighting. The war would drag longer and more people would die, a huge waste of men.
I think that President Lincoln would have given up on "preserving the Union". The Battle of Gettysburg was a major victory for the Union, which gave them motivation. However, if the Confederates had won, this source of motivation would not have existed. People had already been starting to question why the Civil War was dragging on for so long, so this would have been the final event that would lead them to just want to give up if the Confederates had won.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Jasmine. You contradict the fact that not much would change though you say that Lincoln would stop fighting persistently. That's a change. And even when the South does win, morale wouldn't decrease because there wasn't that much morale to begin with. For the sake of the Union, Lincoln might not have held on much longer. He would drop the whole "preservation" plan and make his main priority to end ths war.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. President Lincoln would not have given up. Following the Battle of Anteitam, the Battle of Gettysburg was General Robert E. Lee's second chance in trying to go offensive towards Union territory.After Union victory, however, the Confederacy was basically on retreat mode & followed more so of a defensive plan. But had the Confederacy win, Lee would have pushed his army & continued his campaign northward. It would have inevitably forced Lincoln to surrender.
ReplyDeleteyour right. President Lincoln would'nt have gave up after all the lives taken during the war and Lincoln's goal was to preserve the Union so I don't think he'll give up after another defeat.
